Ritual Cleansing

Ritual Cleansing

The water flowed slowly at first
filling the shallow basin.
Each drop for an instant submersed
within the soul it sought to chasten.

Every one a transgression pardoned
redemption offered by each.
Forgiveness caresses the soul hardened
seeking to cleanse what it will never reach.

Greedily I quench my thirst
accepting the offer blind
Longing to wash away the curse
encrusted upon my mind

But no, it is not complete.
I am not a soul fresh born.
The peace I feel is not replete.
I am left, still, alone forlorn.

For now the final act must be within.
‘Tis My sin and thus my remotion.
Haunted by all that might have been,
struggling to accept your devotion

Full-face into the basin I plunge -
forcing myself not to breathe.
Still the water falls seeking to expunge
the selfish harm I did to thee.

Each drop further penetrates
my hopeless mind’s chasm
The sound emptily reverberates -
Forgiveness but a phantasm

She stands before me with outstretched arms -
Promising her divine embrace
will shelter me from my soul’s own storms,
if only I will leave this place

My hesitation confirms my mortal needs,
revealing what I chose to keep.
Her gown transformed to widow’s weeds,
pained tears for me she weeps.

Breaking free I banish the delusion.
My chest welcomes the cold air.
Now at once understanding the soul’s conclusion -
Without Forgiveness, what is there?
