Yes, and adding to the list of tragedy, is the current anti-gay legislation in Uganda.

Also, about a month ago, a guy in Puerto Rico was murdered, torn into pieces, and partially burned because he was gay.

Violence is violence and death is death, but just for the sake of accuracy, Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado was not murdered [only] because he was gay; he was murdered for his feminine gender expression. His murderer believed him to be a woman and brutally killed him when he found out otherwise. Of course this is no excuse, but it does add another dimension to the "story" and shows that regardless of how hard we work to teach people the difference between sexual orientation and gender expression, the hateful reactions toward anyone who dares challenge these concepts still remain the same.
