Independence Day

Today I stood in a crowd of cheerful, flagwaving AMerican citizens in the small Ca. town I have been living in, as we watched the 4th of July parade. And I wondered how many of them knew that the espoused values of liberty and justice for all did not apply to many of their fellow citizens simply because of their preference in a life partner. Although gay Californians have now been afforded the right to marry, those whose partner's happen to come from another country DO NOT have the right to sponsor said partner on a wive's or fiancee's Visa as do all their straight counterparts.

What should be the basic right has been stripped away from them and I know it makes it hard for my woman to feel truly proud of being an American and celebrate Independence Day when she feels second class knowing that over 15 other countries around the world afford their citizens this right.

In 7 weeks I must leave the US and her, having exhausted all legal avenues, the only thing left to me is to try and educate as many people, one on one, as I can and encourage all my fellow Mel's members to point out this anomaly in the Immigration system to people they know. There is currently a bill before the Senate called the United American Families Act and I would suggest writing your local representative and asking them where they stand on this issue. With more and more people meeting online all over the world it is essential that US citizens are no longer denied the opportunity to live together with their life partner in their own country. Thanks for listening, I have written a poem called Independence Day which is posted in the Emotional section of the Poetry boards if you are interested.

Best of luck to both of you Noni. I must admit, I agree wholeheartedly.
