I went in her room, sat down on the bed and this is how it went...

Mom says, "What did you do now?"
I said, "I didn't break the law." Sigh.
"Everytime you start something with a sigh like that it's never good."
"Mom, I don't think it's bad."
"Well then what?"
Sigh........

Mom says, "Why don't you just write it down and give it to me."
Sigh. "I don't want to write it down." Sigh.
"Can you stop kicking your feet you're shaking the whole bed and driving me nuts."
"Mom, Brandi and I are dating."
"Well, I knew that, what did you think I was stupid?"
"Why didn't you tell me you knew, I've been stressing for weeks."
"I'm not stupid, you spent the nights with her at the hotel, you talk for hours on the phone, you can' t be more than 5 minutes without talking to her, I'm not stupid."
Sigh.
Mom says, "What about when Sammi (my daughter) hears this? This isn't normal."
"I don't think Sammi needs to know anything right now."
"Is that it?"
"Yeah"
"Ok"

Feels awful damn normal to me.
What's not normal about loving someone?
And why shouldn't children know about love?
I think the younger children are when they learn to not judge and be accepting, the easier it is for them. Shouldn't they be learning what's right from mom now, rather than unlearning the crap they pick up in school?
Just my silly thoughts.
Good luck, Jess, and congrats for coming out to your mom. That took guts, and I wish she had responded better, but give her time. Parents have to go through their own process with this, just like we do.
