Lesbian/Gay Role-models/Spokespersons

I did an on-line survey today for Out-In-Africa, the society that organises our film festivals, and one of the questions really had me thinking... so i wondered, what the Ladies at Mels would answer to the following:

"Which 5 people would you regard as role-models/spokespersons for the gay community?"

Love to hear what your answers will be, and why you have picked them

hmmm..

Lucy Lawless
Martina Lavratolova
Melissa Ethridge
kd Lang
Eleanor Rosevelt (spelling?)
Michealangelo

ah... the hard part... why?... because though some aren't "recorded" gay... they are... and they're all grand people.. they all stuck to their dreams with regard to who they are .... afterall, we're more than good in bed, right?... its important to be who you are... and i'm more than lesbian... i'm 100% me, dreams, failures, endeavors and all.... these people helped me understand that being lesbian is only part of who i am... being true to myself, my beliefs, my dreams is MORE... and if i can be more of me AND lesbian Idea

very cool topic...

Cave picked some very good ones for very good reasons.

While I do see many people…gay, lesbian and straight that are good everyday people who would be good role models for anyone…they are rarely chosen as a role model because they are not famous and have no camera’s pointed their way. People such as my parents and grandparents. People like Amy Fergusson, she is a eighty-eight year old neighbor we use to have. She is a wonderful, decent, kind and very loving woman who knows how to treat people and the world she lives in. Some people who are no longer with us would make wonderful role models such as Jeanne d'Arc…a woman who stood up for her beliefs and stood firm within them. A role model does not have to be someone who believes EVERYTHING you do and you do not have to agree with EVERYTHING they believe but the basics should be there.

As far as a spokesperson goes that is different because these people are out there and shouting out for the rights of all of us. They should be decent people who live good lives and promote the things we value as a whole. They do not and should not conform to all of our beliefs because some of the things some of us believe and value others do not but they should at the very least be good people living an honest life. For me these are people such as Bono from U2 and Winona LaDuke (who a wonderful lady in chat reminded me of) among many others.

Among many and in no particular order

Martina Navratilova
Sappho
Winona LaDuke
Bono
Jeanne d'Arc
Mary Robinson

They may not all be gay or lesbian but they would all make wonderful role models or be a wonderful spokesperson.

Hugs,

I'm coming at this question differently than those before me. My approach is what I see directly affecting me in my life. I think lesbian role models, for me, are people I see everyday, albeit on the screen here at Mels.
I've watched these people give advice, share their hearts, cry with people,
perform such kindnesses, firstly because of who they are, and secondly because they prefer women. They have helped women come out, be who they are meant to be and feel safe. They are, to me, the epitome of goodness. The results of what I've seen them do for others here far exceed what a spokesperson could do. This is 'hands on' work, one to one here. They don't need a podium, and probably wouldn't want one.
These are my choices, in no particular order:

Linda Bray
Cavewoman
Melons
Darkchildskiss
Eiregirl

There you have it.
