Re: House Passes Anti-Bullying Legislation

Laws do not change or solve the problem they just identify the problem and set guidelines for punishment. So it has finally come once again that we punish someone for how they feel and their point of view. Instead of trying to change that persons perception lets punish them for speaking out and stating how they feel.

Do not misunderstand me because I have been there. I have withstood the comments and “bullying” about my sexual orientation and I believe I became stronger because of it. Does everyone handle it the same way? Of course they do not. Some will just fluff it off and think "how stupid that idiot is" while others will take it all to heart and become depressed about it or feel threatened etc. there are as many ways different people deal with it as there are people. I did not run off whining and crying “there should be a law against them saying stuff like that” but that is just the way I dealt with it along with kicking a few people in the balls. Where did most of the “harassment” take place…outside of the school because the school already had guidelines for behavior in place as I am sure Iowa schools already have…and they do because I looked some up. Those polices that are in place are not being adequately enforced so we must make new ones to enforce old ones? That really makes a lot of sense to me…sounds like the politics of government at work. This bill does nothing. If the teacher cannot control the classroom, if the principle cannot control the school and so on up the food chain then it is time to replace them with people who can.

I will save further comment until I have read the bill. Once I read it I might just change my mind.
