My soul slumbers as the pages I'm reading
shuffle and close, the book lying lifeless on my chest,
looking as lazy as my now napping body.
It is afternoon and I should be working,
but instead I am drifting.
A crack of lightning,
and I'm on a sandy nighttime beach,
crouching under magnificent stars,
picking up seashells that the ocean's foam
leaves behind as it retreats into the inky horizon.
The pounding waves seduce my senses,
beating a rhythm so much like my heartbeat.
Homes glow with light in the distance,
families inside, eating, talking.
There is so much love here.
I'm smiling, flirting with the moon
and laughing at the clouds.
I'm sitting cross-legged in the sand
telling the sky about the love I found.
Eyelids fly open as quickly as they snapped shut,
and I'm startled straight out of my dreamworld.
There is work to do, conversations to be had,
and no beach nearby except the one I just left behind.
I'll let my soul slumber just a little while longer...
Let it roam with this sweet stolen time.
