Warrior's Prayer
Side Note - thanks again Goddess. Sorry it took me so long - my life's a wirlwind right now. I have more but its not finished and I was going to wait but I figured I needed to post something - the "No Post" sign was killing me.
Also, I think I missed some edits in my rush - but I'll be back to fix it all soon.
The day had dawned clear and beautiful. There was a light breeze coming off the western mountains and the clouds were rolling gently in the blue sky. The sun’s rays coated the earth with warmth and the tall grass on the hill upon which I stood, bent and waved, dancing with the wind. The day was the essence of peace and tranquility. It foretold nothing of the bloodshed about to be spilt.
“Adriana!” the commander bellowed my name from further up the hill. I didn’t bother turning, I knew what he wanted. The vanguard of the Sagin’s Army had crested the hill in the distance. They would meet our forces within the half mark. The other captains and I had spent the night huddled within the commander’s tent going over strategies and making contingency plans until my eyes had watered. We’d had our troops up and in place well before dawn, our scouts having spotted the enemy the day before.
I looked to my left, the armed and trained sat at ease covering every inch of ground from my hill to the small little hill half a mile away. I looked to my right and found the same sight. Returning my gaze to the valley before me I saw the rest of our troops spread out for another quarter mile. Despite the numbers it was relatively quiet. Just the occasional creak of leather and metal as someone shifted or the neigh of a horse. Some found the sight eerie.
“No army should be this quiet before a battle,” a Hatani Lord had once told me. “It’s unnatural.”
I’d just smiled at him, as I smiled now. These were Dashani. Dashani knew how to be respectful to the Lord of Wars. His work was about to be started and the Dashani sat in silence now as an act of homage. We are but tools for our Lord, the voice of my father returned to me. Some would be used to take life and others to give life, but all knew it was the Lord’s work, and you did not belittle the Lord’s work.
One of the few standing, I slowly drew my sword, the sound of it easing out of its sheath calming my mind, stilling my racing heart. Withdrawn I took it in both hands and marveled at it’s beauty for a moment. It seemed alive in my hands. The steel warm and awaken, its senses heighten and as sharp as its edge, it was ready for battle, it just waited on me to commanded it. Shortly, I told it. Very Shortly.
Feeling the moment ripe I trusted my sword arm up into the air, light shimmered and bounced off the edges of the blade. Beside me the message bearer raised a flag. The message was carried both left and right like a wave and as the last flags were raised at the flanks all around me Dashani warriors rose in silence and drew their weapons. The sound of thousands of weapons being pulled sounded like thunder to my ears, crackling and rumbling down across the valley.
I waited hand held high until silence once again returned to the valley. Then I slammed my sword into the ground before me and knelt in my armor, resting my hands on the hilt of my sword.
“Let us pray,” I did not scream it, I did not bellow it, I had the flag messenger for that. He waved another flag and like a ripple effect with me at it’s epicenter, warriors fell to their knees and bowed their heads. Once I sensed everyone bowed I lowered my own head onto my hilt and began the Warrior’s Prayer.
O my Lord!
My God of War and Thunder.
Lo, my hands for you to use.
Lo, my legs for you to lead.
My sword do wield.
My life to spend.
These gifts I do but yield,
to your glory, to your honor.
My only prayer
that when I die,
be it with remembrance,
be it with your power,
and lead my soul to thee
where those of honor
do live and dwell.
For when I rise
I do to battle go
Command me, my Lord.
My God of War,
My God of Thunder.
Command your
