What is a Diamante?
A Diamante is a seven-line poem set up in a diamond shape.
The structure of the poem is as follows…
The first line begins with a noun/subject
The second line contains two adjectives that describe the beginning noun.
The third line contains three words ending in “ing” relating to the noun/subject.
The forth line contains two words that describe the noun/subject and two that describe the closing synonym/antonym. (If using an antonym for the ending, this is where the shift should occur.)
The fifth line contains three more “ing” words describing the ending antonym/synonym.
The sixth contains two more adjectives describing the ending antonym/synonym.
The last line ends with the first noun's antonym or synonym.
Here is another way to look at the structure of the poem.
Line 1 - Noun or subject
Line 2 - Two Adjectives describing the first noun/subject
Line 3 - Three -ing words describing the first noun/subject
Line 4 - Four words: two about the first noun/subject, two about the antonym/synonym
Line 5 - Three -ing words about the antonym/synonym
Line 6 - Two adjectives describing the antonym/synonym
Line 7 - Antonym/synonym for the subject
Here is another pattern often used for writing a Diamante…
Line 1 - word (subject, noun can also be the title)
Line 2 - two words (adjectives describing line 1)
Line 3 - three words (verbs-participles ending in ed or ing)
Line 4 - four words (nouns)
Line 5 - three words (verbs- participles ending in ed or ing)
Line 6 - two words (adjectives)
Line 7 - two words (related to or synonyms for line 1)
There is no reversal from the subject to the antonym in this pattern. Everything in this pattern builds off the first line.
These forms (especially the first) are as much about the shape of the poem as anything else. So keep that in mind.
A little history…
Iris M. Tiedt of San Jose California created the Diamante. In May of 1969 she published an article titled “A new poetry form, The Diamante” and a new form of poetry was born.
