The Cows Paved

The Cows Paved
…the way.

Manure-caked hoof tracks become chipmunk bathtubs
after a warm rain

Stump table and chairs, boulder bed, moss pillow,
Raspberry bush kitchen, vine-woven bowls

Rusty rakes and snippers, twine, a shovel, a dull
Pruning saw
Our construction tools, farm hand-me-downs

Tall thorn-laden skylights through which the moon
Ignites play, plywood drawbridge, cubby-holed secret treasure
Room

Look-out on the tallest rock where we saw the ravens
And recited Poe, as ten-year olds know how to
Recite Poe

Rock-strewn staircase that became a waterfall in rain,
A hill to slide down in snow, the herd’s path in spring,
Where we

Escaped adolescence ‘til it escaped us.
