Protector

the Persian cat
soft and fluffy
claws sheathed when not threatened
glances skyward at the danger
predators and scavengers
capable of killing her
even with her claws extended

the Persian cat
makes her rounds
her territory
protects those in her care
and greets them with a purr

the Persian cat
eyes ever watchful
seeing things unnoticed
by innocents
warning with a growl

the growl is mistaken
for an attack
aimed at those she protects
Look at her gaze
see where she glances
beyond, to the predator
and the scavenger

the Persian cat knows
this will not be a fair fight
but she must protect her charges
even though they only see
her extended claws
and teeth bared

they do not understand
if they only turned their heads
the danger to their own territory
would come into view
they could even the odds
but they are blinded

they do not understand
what protection will they have
when this loyal protector
is overpowered?

They focus on the claws
and the teeth bared
in a stance to protect them
and misunderstand

They run in fear
hiding from the protector
the protector that needs
protecting

the Persian cat
domesticated and loving
but still hearing the call in her ear
"I am a cat, wild and free"
Loves her charges
and will protect them still
even though they have abandoned her
to the predators

Knowing her claws and teeth
are not enough
she stands her ground
and watches the predators
Hyenas and vultures

She is not dead yet
her thoughts quicken
perhaps, though there will
be nothing left of her body
except her blood on their lips
those more powerful
will see the blood
and banish the predators

Better still
perhaps her charges
will see the fight
from their hiding places
and come to her aid

It matters not
she will stand her ground
that is what she has been
asked to do

Well written Khal! I have always been fascinated by the idea that deep inside our domesticated pets lies the soul and the rememberances in their DNA of the wild animals their forebears were.

HugZ, MG

PS: On this theme, one night I was watching a TV show about wolves with my fluffy little, inbred, house dog, a Shihtzu/Silkie Terrier cross. At one stage when the wolves began howling, she woke up, jumped off the couch and stood their howling along with the pack!!! I have never heard her make a noise like that before. When they were finished, she stood there for a moment looking confused, as if to say "I'm not sure why I did that, but it sure felt good!"

MG and J,

Thank you for your responses. MG, I laughed when I read about your dog! So cute! In keeping with that theme, I have a persian cat, Madison. He's as sweet as they come, never been in a cat fight and I thought he wouldn't have a clue what to do! One day a neighbor's cat somehow got into our house. My cat is just under 10 pounds, this neighbor's cat a good 15 pounds! Well, Madison cornered Tux and let him know he did NOT belong here! LOL I ran into the living room to see what the commotion was all about and found Tux cowering in the corner, Madison puffed up, howling and hissing! I opened the back door and poor Tux (outweighing Madison by 5 pounds) tripped all over himself getting out!

Great poem sweety! For Madison.....

The Tiger (partial lyrics from Abba song)

"I am behind you, I'll always find you, I am the tiger
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
And if I meet you, what if I eat you, I am the tiger
I am behind you, I'll always find you, I am the tiger
Tiger, tiger, tiger! "
