Winter snows (#49 Lai)
Lai
What is a Lai?
A Lai is a lyrical verse form with a specific syllable count and rhyme scheme.
Structure:
The way a Lai is structured is quite simple actually. There are nine lines with a syllable pattern of 5-5-2-5-5-2-5-5-2 and the rhyme scheme is A-A-B-A-A-B-A-A-B. In poetry the Lai can be a single stanza or it can have multiple stanza’s

Terms:
Stanza – A stanza is a term used in poetry to describe an arrangement of lines separated into groups.
A stanza having lines of the same meter and length is called isometric while a stanza in which the lines are not all the same meter and length are called anisometric.
Syllable – A syllable is a unit of pronunciation that forms a whole or part of a word such as “to” is a one syllable word while “tomorrow” is a three syllable word.
Rhyme – In poetry rhymes are words that have a similar sound especially at the end of a word such as with the words “muse” and “defuse” or “empire” and “desire”.
History:
I have not been able to find a lot of information on the history of the Lai form other than to somewhat trace its origins. The Lai of today comes to us by way of 12th century French poets most notably the poetess Marie De France but prior to the 14th century the Lai was mainly connected to Celtic minstrels and were primarily called Breton Lais or Welsh Llais and these date back much farther than the 12th century.
My poem:
Winter snows
The warm water flows
The wind of change blows
We dream
A tree sprouts and grows
In the breeze it bows
We scream
With the winter snows
The sun shines and glows
