A little history…
The Ottava Rima is of Italian origin and was originally used for long poems with heroic themes and in the writing of mock-heroic works. The writings of Giovanni Boccaccio are the earliest known use of Ottava Rima. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries this was the form to use for writing epic poems in Italian.
Now my poem…
Sorrow
(© 2006 Aoibhegréine)
Do you ever think of sorrows from the past
Do they swirl around like a raging storm
Creeping up inside when thought gone at last
With sorrow filling your mind you are torn
Life…in all its forms just goes by too fast
Do you remember friends from childhood born
Friends ripped from your life at life’s very start
But never could they be ripped from your heart
Here they will always reside here inside
Feelings of sorrow will not be quelled
Within your heart they should never reside
On the day when the feelings have swelled
With a friend or loved one you must confide
Within your heart sorrow should not be held
In the end sorrow will not be denied
For bright days ahead you must be compelled
