Sexual Orientation and Obesity

It's not the study that bothers me but the characterization of it.

There's a study that's getting alot of press lately, even thougth the study
has been going on for 2 years and is due to complete in 2016.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) here in the USA has put forth
1 1/2 million dollars to look into the interplay of gender and sexual orientation in obesity disparity. Thus far they say that 75% of lesbians are obese, gay men are not. However, 50% of women that are straight are obese. However, they are not studying the straight woman.

What are your thoughts?

That link isnt working for me Mdm, sorry.

Before I read the article I will comment that in the city where I live and the circle of gay women I know I do find there to be a higher proportion of overweight/obese women compared to the groups of straight women I know. But not 75%, more like 50%?

Sorry the link didn't work for you. I suppose you could google it
and I'm sure lots would pop up.

The word "obese" connotes well more than overweight.

What a way to spend $1,500,000.

Couldnt agree more...total waste of time and money because no doubt they will do very little about their findings when the study is finished.

Straight men generally prefer women who are thin. Hence, a whole industry devoted to diets and weight-loss, because straight women want to be attractive to men. Lesbians don't give a damn what men prefer, and don't share their strong preference for thinness. In fact, I recall a poll at this very forum some time ago, where it was asked whether the readers here preferred a woman to be thin, average, a little extra pounds or more than a little. A few extra pounds was the most popular response.

Here it is. Xalia posed the question, and it got tons of replies.

I wonder what the initial research question was (although I'm sure it's outlined in the abstract) before this study imploded. I wouldn't say it's ridiculous - they research all kinds of things, and perhaps they've already done the straight woman calculations... in fact I'm sure of it. That said, 1.5mil?... yeah that could fix a pothole or two.

A lot of academic research 'goes nowhere'; but on the other hand you never know what may prove to be useful in the future. I remember reading that someone did a study to see if ulcers heal all over at the same rate, or heal inwards from the periphery. I have no idea what the thinking was behind the research, nor whether the findings were any use - it was just research for its own sake that might turn out useful some time. Orientation and obesity? Who knows!
