needing support in stopping smoking

after a health scare last week i have decided to give up smoking
i have tried many times in the past and am determind to succeed this time

i have set the date 28th Febuary 2009 as my starting date to quit
previous time's i haven't had support and have slipped back on to the cigs

i could really do with support in this

i got such a fright last week
i spent 2 days in hospital with a suspected mini stroke which test's finally came back clear
i still have to have further test's to find out what has happened to my arm (i've lost strength and got numbness in my left arm plus my top lip keeps going numb as well)
thankfully i am slowly regaining some of my strenght back

so please can i have some support to help me quit this dreaded addiction?

You betcha, Tracey. You can do this... though I know it won't be easy for sure. Hang in there, and I hope you are getting better and better each day. Sincerely, "J"

Tracey,

First Im sorry that you are undergoing some health problems, and I hope the Drs can find out soon what is causing the symptoms. Sometimes it takes a scare like this to finally make us wake up and realise we do need to quit. Exactly the same thing happened to me about 5 weeks ago, I got a bad chest infection and was coughing so much and then my asthma kicked in, and thru the whole first week of it I was trying to sneak smokes!!!!! Finally I woke up and made the decision to stop.

It is not easy, but then nothing worthwhile is. If you are a heavy smoker I suggest you contact your nearest Quit line and get some help with perhaps nicotine patches or gum etc. They also may be able to set you up with a 'buddy' system or even a course to attend.

At home, get rid of ALL your cigarettes, DO NOT have any anywhere to tempt you, when it got really bad I used to say to myself, OK I want to smoke but all I have to do is not drive to the shop to buy some, somehow that seemed more manageable. Also write out a note for yourself reminding exactly why you are doing this, when we are in the depths of deprivation it is too hard to remember WHY we started this in the first place.

Well, thats just a few ideas, good luck hon and feel free to PM me anytime. I know a couple of other gals on Mels who have quit recently so maybe they have some itips for you too.

HugZ, Noni

OMG Tracey - let us know how you get on with the tests, hopefuly it's something smaller like Bell's Palsy (also scary but much milder than a stroke!!). How on earth are you managing with your arms, foot n mouth out of order??? Have you got people coming in? Shocked

Good luck with not smoking!

(Soz I can't give any advice on smoking as it's something I promised to take up when I've learnt enough control to stop biting my nails, getting closer by the decade! No, I'm not being flippant!)

well done Noni
5 weeks is a big achievment
i've been in touch with the local stop smoking group (fresh-ayrshire)
but i have been put on a waiting list!!!
my dr won't prescribe me any NRT till i've seen one of the fresh-ayrshire counsellors!
so as i'm quitting this weekend i have no help!!! Sad

*sighs*

please don't consider starting as it's a flithy habit and hard to quit

thankfully the toe is healing well but the arm and neck are still bothering me
hopefully find out more when i get tests done

as for biting nails! i stopped when my parents had a farm!
nails and farming are definate no no's! lol
my nails and hands where always smelling of silage which smells worse than cow muck!! and harder to get rid of the smell

you CAN and WILL Stop Smoking Wink my friend used patches and has given up now completely and she tells me that she would and could never ever smoke again,it wasn't until she gave up that she relised just how awful peoples clothes smell when they are a smoker. Rolling Eyes

I gave up about 12 years ago i woke up one morning and felt very ill,my eyesight was failing, i was rushed to hospital and it was discovered that i had a bleed in my head, being a heavy smoker the consultant told me that i was very lucky THIS TIME.I gave him my cigarettes out of my handbag and i have never smoked since(i used to smoke 40 gigarettes a day) Embarassed If i can stop smoking anyone can. Well, it's February 28 th, your kick-off date. So I have the brass band
all ready to lead you, with all of your Mels'friends, into better days.
YOU CAN DO IT!!!
I've never smoked, but I've heard it's hell to quit. By the way, Mel stopped with the aid of a CD (can't think of the name). Maybe she can advise you too. But she's done so well.

i did decide to put it off till tomorrow (1st march)
but i ran out of filters so today it is!
just don't know what to do with myself today
gone through 5 carrots already! lol
and ran out of chocolate
but resisting going to the shop for more chocolate
last thing i want to do is put more weight on! as i'm struggling in the weight fight

my pussy cats seem happy i haven't smoked though!
i dread what damage i may of done to their health over the years!
but the scare last week made me realise how much damage i am doing to myself and those around me

it's been a long day so far

Mel if your reading this? can you tell me the title of the cd you used please?

Congratulations on your first step towards a smoke free life!

I've never smoked so I can't give you much advice on how to stop. I do know that the UK has a huge stop smoking campaign that gives people support and even the tools to stop. Different things work for different people but you might want to give them a call.

Take care

Big hugs

Jan
