mtv show "a shot at love"

I don't have cable, but in the past few weeks I came across the show "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila" on mtv.com. At first I was really skeptical on how MTV might build a cast based on stereotypes, but I was somewhat surprised.

Sure, there is arguably a gratuitous focus on sex (it is MTV after all), but I think there is a deeper message being sent out. Tila has narrowed down the contestants from 16 guys and 16 girls down to one of each, whom I believe she honestly has a connection to. They weren't the loudest, craziest, most attention grabbing people, but they were genuine.

I just wanted to say I appreciate MTV putting out a show where love supercedes gender. The finale is this Tuesday, and I can't wait to see how it ends!

If anyone else has any thoughts (positive or negative) on the show, I would love to discuss it. There is a lot of interesting ideas this brings up Smile

I'll be the first to say this is bullshit.

It's got nothing to do with tolerance because, like you said, it's MTV. They thrive on what's big at the moment and right now, teenybopper attention-whores claiming to be bisexual to get pervy boys in their pants is what's big. Not to spoil your surprise, but I can tell you there'll be one of two outcomes:

1. She'll pick a girl for ratings and they'll be over just as quickly.

2. She'll pick a guy and there'll be an uproar from the aformentioned teenyboppers.

It's bad enough I have to deal with these "gay for a day" twits and now it's downright insulting that they're on television. Fuck 'em, fuck Tila Tequila, and most of all, FUCK MTV!

Ahem... just my two cents.

I realize that picking the girl would be a big hit for MTV's ratings. However, to put out the idea to younger people that love doesn't have to be limited by gender seems important. I definitely agree with your skepticism on the sincerity of the show, but I can't completely dismiss it as another one of their sex-filled half-assed excuses for television (see I Love New York or Flavor of Love ::gag:Smile.

If her relationship with who she picks goes nowhere, good for both of them. Knowing someone in that situation is as far from reality you can get, so once the cameras stop rolling you really don't know the person standing next to you. So no, you really didn't ruin the surprise, but I am still interested in how this all unfolds. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Mol Mol!

Believe me, there are much, much more positive ways of getting that message out. If anything, this just trivializes it and by extension us as a community.

Then again, why would I expect anything less from the Hellspawn that is MTV?

I'll have to admit that I'm old enough to remember when MTV first came out. Back then it actually only played ~gasp~ music.

I'm a bit bothered by the crush of "reality" TV. These shows are devoid of reality in most cases, because boring won't sell. However, on the other hand, a show like this does push at the edges of American culture.

I remember there was an uproar when inter-racial couples were seen dancing together on Dance Party USA...in the 1980s!! But, it pushed at the boundaries, challenged definitions, changed perceptions.

I haven't seen the show with Ms Tequila but I've read a article, here and have been following the debate. It's interesting...maybe there is something to be gained from, what appears to be, vapid tv programming. Or maybe we haven't come very far at all.

How many interracial couples do you seen on TV, on average? On my last count, it was diddly-squat. And like you said, that was over 20 years ago.

Still a lack of them, for sure...but isn't there an interracial couple on the hit show Grey's Anatomy? We're a little behind in Africa, so I dunno where the show is at. What about on Lost, or even ER a while back before they killed the guy off in the Iraq war?

I must say that inter-racial couples are much more visible in public than they were 20 years ago and just a tiny bit better tolerated.

And you think some dumb reality show is going to make lesbians more visible and accepted? Right. Tila is as big a poseur as those chicks from Tatu, except for what's it's worth they were honest about it. Any lesbian relationship that results from this will dissolve faster than the last celebrity marriage and there's your message.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear enough above.

What I think is that "some dumb reality show," like some dumb dance show of the past, perhaps will start people talking, and challenging, and thinking about the blurry edges of American culture....about what is acceptable and what is not. Perhaps a vapid TV show can make more of a difference than decades of angry lesbians complaining and screaming.

The world is changing. Lesbians are more visible. We keep pushing at the edges and perhaps, one day, we will be more accepted by the mainstream.

Acceptance that will only be hurt by her treating the lesbian community as her personal harem of bimbos for the choosing.

I'll be the first to admit that I am naïve, and maybe I sometimes look for the positive spin on things that most people are quick to discredit. I stand by what I said, that this show does redeem itself, even if remotely. Hawaiian brings up the excellent point that society takes time to accept change, as with interracial relationships and other once taboo areas.

I guess I should add I first heard about this show from my brother (who is straight, fyi). Before I knew anything about the cast, storyline, etc, he was telling me what he thought of both the men and women on the show. He didn't objectify or antagonize anyone based on their sexuality, but remarked on their personality and demeanor. Now, my brother is only 17 years old, and he is smart enough to see beyond mtv's BS and have a real conversation about how relationships can be about more than gender. If other viewers can only grasp "who is hot" or reduce the characters to stereotypes or scripted liars, then that is their loss.

Just curious Mol Mol, what do you suggest MTV do differently? Or if not MTV, what other mainstream outlet should be working towards spurring the general public into acknowledging and accepting the lesbian/gay/bisexual community? You have clearly expressed what is wrong today, but what can be made better in the future?

When my girlfriend and i first saw the previews for this show, we both looked at eachother and smacked our faces in horror.. this is exactly one of the big reasons why so many older generations are opposed to 'us'... all it is viewed as is-- sex and fun.. and it really just gets on my nerves.. i suppose as the show started airing good friends of ours ranted and raved about the women on the show and how most of them looked like hookers you'd pick up on the side of the road, but there was one contestant Dani, who really seemed to have it all together.. I watched the last few episodes of the season just to witness what my friends were talking about-- at the finale tila had it narrowed down to a guy and a girl.. through all the hype Dani was by far the favorite amongst the fans... however tila ended the show picking bobby and stating "i do love dani, im just IN love with bobby".. i was outraged at the audacity of this show. Although skeptical about it at first i gave MTV the benefit of the doubt and thought "well maybe this is good... maybe this is making a stride towards more gay tv shows." man was i wrong. This show took 5 steps forwards and TEN steps back.. it just goes to show all of those people who believe bisexuality is not real- that in the end the girl will always choose a boy... because that's whats considered "natural". THe show made a total mockery of homosexuals in general. Their lifestyle, their beliefs.. everything. And it really bothers me to know that there are young teens out there, struggling- trying to find out who they are.. and there resources are limited to internet porn, and tila tequila.. *sigh* sorry for the rant guys..

couldnt have said it better myself....

quite frankly i dont think it matters what MTV is trying to plug....they suck. theyve become a trashier version of FOX, with underlying music tones. i too remember back in the day when mtv actually played more music than whores showing off their asses to try and get with some former famous person or whoever. mtv to me now, is like a non-stop episode of jerry springer and i will have nothing to do with it anymore.

they didnt make this show to try and open people up to the ideas of same sex couples. they did it for ratings, pure and simple. and who watches mtv? teens and young adults, the one group which i think is able to grasp the ideas of love without prejudices. if mtv really wanted to make an impact for the gay community theyd have teamed up with one of those stuffy conservative networks to try and get the message out to older people who seem to have more trouble understanding what its like to fall for someone of the same gender. (now im not saying there are no older people who accept gays, and no young people who denounce it-- but majority wise)

also, i dont think its just mtv. like mol said, its whats hot at the moment. little teenyboppers doing stuff for attention. and the adults who know how to feed off their needs, making products for kids that i wouldnt have touched until my early 20's...its not just the alkie bitch on mtv, its mostly everything in marketing today.

This isnt about the show exactly but to the people who have seen it.. wouldn't you love Dani's Family and Friends. that to me is what was important about the show... her family at home and her family at the fire house putting Tequila in her place... the line one of the firefighters used "you are LUCKY to have Dani in your life" was the best thing i have ever heard. not Dani was lucky to do the show Tequila was LUCKY to have Dani... That is what its about... showing there IS acceptance out there in places you may not expect it.
my 2 cents
