Mels 2007 Campout, Vacation, Meeting...

Ummm well it was getting confusing looking at the other post so I ummm said screw it and started this one. Razz

I ummm also added the other posts related to 2007 to the bottom of this one...

At this time I cannot and will not promise to make the next one...we planned on and even packed for the last one and well...obviously things happened (someone got sick who got someone else sick) and we were not able to go...so no promises from me at this time.

Cave,
Your suggestions are good.
"1...a location which appeals to many
2...a location which is easily accessible to many without exorbitant expense
3...a location which offers a variety of activities to groups, couples, singles and families offering comfort and security to all
4...perhaps even a registration process of sorts in order to track true commitment to attendance
5...a focused agenda"

First things first...
Objective,
The main reason for the “get together” is to meet and get to know one another and do things together as a group and have fun. Everything else is extra

This is just my opinion as to some things to consider in picking a location.
What kind of setting is wanted? this will determine many of the activities away from home base (home base is where you sleep). This could also be where many of the activities take place depending on the type of place it is.
(Resort, hotel, campground etc. as well as where it is located)

What things should be included at or near home base? Swimming (ocean, lake, river, pool), hiking (mountain, hills, desert, backcountry), casino, festival (such as Oktoberfest), fairs (such as a Renaissance fair), spa, shopping etc.

What kind of things would be nice to have in the area (generally within an hours drive one way)? Nightclubs, comedy clubs, live theater, casino, amusement park, site seeing, fairs, festivals etc.)

If staying at a resort or hotel go to one that has at least one meal provided free (generally breakfast).

There are other questions that could be asked but the most important questions are…
Where do you want the event to take place? Anywhere
What do you want to do? Have fun

Aside from the places already mentioned here are some more

And there are many more places to choose from.

i've spent many hours researching P-town, from what i can discern if we all want to stay in separate B&B's, then fine.... Rehoboth? i haven't checked to be honest..... got any suggestions where 30 or so women could all bunk? Its been since 1975 that i was at Rehoboth, it was all condos at the time... no large guest housing.... Ptown, well, frankly, i haven't been there at all... again........ may i repeat again, suggestions? We need to consider not only adults but also children...

ok... dunno about y'all, but this IS my summer vacation, and i have absolutely no problem at all enjoying it in the company of women i am somehwat familiar with... but then i must look at the larger scope, this site and the many needs which need met if this is to also be their summer vacation....... else, well, it just doesn't work very well, lots of good wishes, but no attendance..

believe me, if i could afford it, i'd rent out the Pointe de Santo on Sanibel Island and to hell with their local "attitude" (which is actually very accepting on a one couple event)... and i'd fly in every lady and her family on the site to Sanibel... but hey, that's not gonna happen

Dueceswild posted this June 25
So this is what I found so far on Ptown... This is thier website www.ptown.org
and I have spoken to a Woman run in that has 30 rooms. This is thier site http://www.innatthemoors.com/ they have offered to give us a 10% discount on the rooms if we would like to have it there within the first 2 weeks of June..... It is a really nice place. They said that we can share rooms to cut down on costs. take a look at the site and let me know what you think....
the town website has all sorts of info about activities and social event in Ptown.... It is a VERY open gay town for those of you that are not aware.... anyway I figure after we get more info on several different places we could do a vote if thats ok so that the majority is happy, I am very aware that there is nowhere in the world that would fit everyones budget or desires but I am hoping that with a little research we can find something that fits most.... Is that ok with everyone?????
Anywho I have babbled long enough...
Later,
Duece
I'm off to find more info on other places....

I know that these are on the east coast but so far these are what I have found to fit our needs

Cave posted this July 1

we looked at Camp Pleiades in NC for 2006 - unfortunately they are no longer in business....

Lemons found a place in Iowa... farmresort.com

inn at the moors looks interesting

BUT... having just returned from this year's outing and still sorting my thoughts... I have one very serious question to pose.... and its primarily based on the excitement buildup/response to the 2006 outing VS. actual attendance.... many women expressed interest, many women responded via chat or via post that we should expect them in camp... 8 of us actually showed up.... I'm not saying that we 8 did not have a very interesting time together because we did... I am saying that we 8 also spent the $, put in the work and took the time away from precious saved vacation time to attend.... I really don't want to go through the $, work or saved vacation time to once again greet 8 women only... So..my question is, just how many of us are truely intending to attend a possible 2007 gathering?

While the 2006 gathering really wasn't that difficult to arrange, it was work emotionally, work to think through/gather/pack/unpack/pack/unpack/stow supplies... and yes, there was work that should have been done that i did not do (My original thoughts were based on response and led me to believe that the group size would lead and dictate activity) such as incorporating more "rainy day" plans, scheduled outings, planned events = an itinerary / agenda of sorts to maintain focus... so in those respects, perspective outings will/should be more work for the planners

among my thoughts are a few things right off the top

1...a location which appeals to many
2...a location which is easily accessible to many without exorbitant expense
3...a location which offers a variety of activities to groups, couples, singles and families offering comfort and security to all
4...perhaps even a registration process of sorts in order to track true commitment to attendance
5...a focused agenda

these are just thoughts ladies.. and very fresh ones at that (I mean no offense and I'm insinuating nothing)... simple observations based on a very fresh experience.

There is no one or two women here that can pull this thing off alone or without help and commitment.... If we're gonna do this again, it should be done with more expertise.

p.s. Sometimes i feel like I'm talking to myself in here. To borrow from Pink Floyd... "Is anybody out there?"

Lemons posted this July 1

Cave,

I don't have much to contribute at this moment as work has kept me from doing more research for next year. But I think you have some very valid thoughts here. Only those that went to this year's campout would know what we need to change/alter when looking for next year's campout.

As if you could see it, I was nodding my head at some of the things you mentioned. With all the excitment of this year, I think when a place is found for next year, a registration process would be ideal. I know with all the chat going back and forth, it was hard to tell who was going and who was just wishing they could go.

I'm glad the eight of you had a wonderful time ..... and hopefully by next year many more of us will be able to go!!!! I was certainly wishing it, that's for sure!

By the looks of what has been posted so far, it seems the east coast seems to have the most opprotunities for us. But, if some continue to search, maybe something will be found. I will do some more looking around here in the next few weeks. If I get a chance, I may see what else I can find on the farmresort.com. I for one just am amazed that this was found in amongst other lesbian camp sites ..... being in Iowa and all. Let alone only 20 minutes from my house! LOL

I'd really like to be able to go next year .... so I will do some searching and see what else there may be in the Midwest since I know that is kinda the goal for next year.

Duece posted this July 3
I completely agree with all of your sugestions for next year...
And as you know I'm very willing to help. IF this gathering happens next year, this is how S and I plan on spending our vacation. Also it is how we plan on celebrating my Graduation! Hehehehe I can't wait!
Here is a suggestion:
A campground that has a DORM type setting. I know that we have 2 campgrounds in my town alone that are great! One has a pool and a lake, dorms, a kitchen and rec hall. The other has 2 HUGE dorms, a kitchen, a fire pit, a look out, a pool, and big dining area (its actually where we used to have band camp LOL) But the thing of this type is that we would have to rent the entire camp for a 5-7 days, that would be super cool because we wouldn't have to worry about entruders, but there would deffinately have to be a registration because its 1 big expense. What I would suggest is that we do a registration with a deposit THEN reserve the camp, therefor if not enough people register than we can return the $$$ and find another place or just not have it.... Whay ya think????

Cave posted all the following on July 4
a lookout AND a pool AND a firepit AND a kitchen? Are we allowed to pitch tents too? Where is this place?

As to registration and deposit... sounds excellent... As to if we don't get enough ladies, return the cash and cancel... I'm not so certain... Sounds like we need a backup plan for those of us who ARE serious.

Seriously, I'd like to have a web address, check out any online photos. And just how expensive is expensive?

----

just found this place... its in Provincetown (I know, I know, east coast stuff, again...) but check this out

brasskey.com

42 gorgeous rooms... really, though, check it, cause it ain't cheap but it sure is gorgeous... I have no idea what they might charge us to rent the whole joint.. but its one hell of a thought.

found another

----

fifes.com

California this time.... y'all got check them though, else feedback will remain nonexistent as it did 2006... come on, if yer serious you'll at least look and give some sort of voice to your thoughts...

----

villaroca.com

Costa Rica anyone?

Mind you... I'm serious.... these places look fabulous.. and yeah, I know their price excludes some ladies...

with all that said, without serious feedback from serious ladies who seriously plan to attend another gathering... well, sort of leaves me all thumbs now doesn't it?

----

bigrubys.com
go to La Plantacion
not really that pricey but sure does look swell..

comments?

i'm here. i'm here.

so here's my response rant:

something tropical sounds nice...hell if its a year away, i can save. i'm doing europe next april already by myself on a backpacking adventure. i've been to costa rica - yum - could be a very nice choice.

if i did the northeast somewhere id have to reckon with my family somehow lol...ptown is nice, but it gets old. lately its more of a boys-town. west coast would be nice. gulf coast would be nice but there isnt one left lol....

considered a lesbian nudist colony? (does one exist? - half joking)

if anyones' up for it - take a look at www.falconridgefolk.com. I go to it every year - it's a folk festival in lower-upstate new york. ive been attending it every year since 1998. its a 4 day event - camping, lots of gay women (and straight ones) - in the berkshires... you have the choice to volunteer or not (i could set that up) in which case you wouldnt have to pay a dime to camp and all your meals would be paid for... and it lasts four days, usually at the end of july. as for the music - think dar williams, ani difranco, eddie from ohio, tracy grammar...loads of fun... and yours truly is the sound engineer on the workshop stage

the 'activities' would be taken care of - i know of a few amazing swimming places in the area, we're 45 min from Northampton MA (5 min from my hometown, i.e. lesbianville USA)...at the festival there's contra/zydeco/folk/square dancing, drum circles, music...tons of workshops/vendors..and the atmosphere is amazingly creative.

just to throw out an idea...

Little confused......

I'm a little confused as to why we are now here.... But that being said. I would LOVE to have it in one of those places, exotic, fun, could be romantic, yada yada yada. However I agree with Slave, I would like the turn out to be better than this year.... To do that I think one thing we need to concider is cost. I'd like to keep it under $50 a night per person. What do you think?

The other night in chat we were tossing around the thought of "two" (more than one) Mel's gathering... one inexpensive and another more expensive... can everybody attend both? I doubt it... Can maybe everybody get to one or the other? Hopefully. ... But its become very obvious from the get go that there are two two very definite tastes in the air = one enjoys or can enjoy camping (camping is inexpensive or can be) .... the other cannot, does not and will not (structured, in place ammenities are usually more expensive).

We're a big bunch of ladies... its helpful to at least have figured out this much... makes satisfying tastes/abilities/willingness more focused.

I keep looking for a resort/camp that can accommodate (sp?) both tastes but have had little success beyond the option of The Highlands In New Hampshire and that is very northeast USA and even then, could only happen if the owners permit tents.

You can blame me for moving it all here...I was getting confused in reading about preparations for this years campout and next years planning.

$50 a night is ok with me and there are some places where the price can be higher and additional people can stay for a lower cost.

Cool!

Well I LOVED the Red Cliffs one in Utah.... I couldn't see the $$ of the rooms, but I liked all of the activities that was available. I also liked the costa rica placa (forgive me I for get the name, but it was the last one on the list) It was affordable and looked great!
I'm game for "trip" and am willing to travel a bit. I've been looking throu my Damerions book and have found a few places I wanna look into, once I get a website for them I will post it.

ps thanks cave

Well I like the Costa Rica one for 2 reasons
1- The fact that it is on the Gay beach
2- The large amout of activities to do
3- the fact that they offer a group discount
my only question is - when would we do this trip because June 1- October 1st is hurricain season, and I don't know about you but I want pleasant weather not a hurricain! LOL

The 2nd one in Cape may I liked, but the I would like to know the cost they would give us, because for June it says $6,300-$7,500 per week. That would be anywhere from $350 to $500 per week per person.
But the plus for me is that is only about a 4 hour drive for me.

What I have found...

So I told you that I have been looking for the perfect place as well.....

I liked this one http://edgewaterresort.net
take time to look around the site some. They do special things for groups, like a big kitchen we can use.

This one has cottages that sleep 6 so it would be aprox. $250 per person per week...... It looks great
http://www.ferngrove.com

Like I said I'm still looking.... I'm pouring throu the pages of my Dameron Travel book (a gay and lesbian travel guide to all that don't know) and calling each one that looks to fit our wants and desires. So far I have looked throu Alabama, Alaska, Arizonia, Arkansas, and some of California. Now mind you the book doesn't have websites so I am having to call them and ask if they have one, I left a BUNCH of messages this morning, but with the time difference it might be a while b4 I hear from them.

I am very picky about what I post. I want some place that appeals to everyone... a great price, great attractions, and not too primitive (so that the squimish of bugs are not left out of the next gathering). I am looking through all 50 states and some international places as well. I know that International will leave some out, but I do want to keep our options open. I think it will open the door for others not in the USA.

Off to read my book some more!

I spent alot of time on the phone with one of the owners- Sara- who was very helpful. She says that if we would like to go to the ranch that they can accomidate 20-30 of us if we are willing to bunk together. It looks like an AWSOME place.

so many neat places - i'll marinate on them all a bit and then write more. i'll be searching around for options, too.

in the meantime...i like dueces' question about hurricane season. i would prefer to exclude a panic attack from my first date with ya'll. but - i'm a big girl. i'll be there, whatever we choose. Smile

Hurricanes are not a major concern in Costa Rica. The shape of the Gulf of Mexico dictates that the storms turn north soon after entering and out of the past several hundred only Hurricane Cesár has made landfall in Costa Rica in 1996.

Granted, that particular paragraph did not include Mitch of 1998 which struck in October, killed 14 people and dumped 6 feet of rain causing major mudslide problems.

Manuel Antonio is on the Pacific Coast which again is sort of silly to mention because the country is so slender.

Weather-wise, it seems earthquakes are more of a concern than hurricanes. As to the Green Season (hurricane months), most of the reading I have done says that the sun shines in the morning, the clouds build in the afternoon, the rain falls at night.

And yes, money is a factor for many ladies, while Costa Rica is beautiful, I grant you, getting there plus passport quickly makes the venture unaffordable for many. It was just a thought.

I tossed a bunch of those places up there just to see what reactions would be.

Deuce, I appreciate the help !! I looked at Susa's in my online search but nixed the place because of the small number of rooms. I can't speak for everyone, but I can speak for Phyllis = she'll bunk with one woman, myself. While that may mean, we find a private room someplace close by, it remains a fact for me. Which is why I kept looking for places with many rooms or cabins.

I will continue the search.

I have written The Highlands but as of yet haven't heard back from them with regard to allowing us to pitch a few tents on the 100+ acre grounds for those who can't swing a room.

I like the Inn At The Moors too, looks very peaceful. Being on the outskirts AND the way the place is constructed, we'd also have our privacy. Being only 20 minutes from the hustle and bustle also provides the busier ladies with options. Having spent several summers on Martha's Vineyard, I assure you, the climate and ambience are very pleasant.

listing number 19269 Casco Pacific facing Osa Peninsula (#1 on your list) looks absolutely gorgeous though I can't say I'm familiar with the area would need to do some more research .....

Listing number 5139 also appears to be very very comfortable. While the pool area is magnificent as are the bedrooms, the pool does seems to be rather close to the neighbors. (#3 on your list). If the next gathering is anything like the first, as the week goes by, intimacy becomes more public.

Of all the Florida listings I like the last 5131 best ...(#10 on your list) , primarily because of the privacy offered around the pool area...which seems to be the entire back side of the house... not to mention the looks and descriptions of the bedrooms, sounds like the owners put a great deal of thought into the layout and kept large groups AND privacy AND group fun in mind.

But ya know, Florida does get hurricanes... what months are you thinking? May? September?
