ALLIES

Today I attended an ALLIES training workshop on the university campus. This program is on several college/university campuses across the nation, where attendees are informed of ways in which they can A) use more inclusive language in classroom discussions, B) provide a "safe" place for GLBTQ students to talk, and C) provide a non-discriminatory education for all students.

At the end of the workshop, the participants were given an "ALLIES" sign to post on our office doors. This sign has a rainbow across the top and provides an explanation of how the professor inside believes that all students have the right to pursue their education in peace and dignity, free from harassment, discrimination, and oppression.

A year ago I would have been freaked out by anyone suggesting that I put a rainbow sign outside of my office, but the support of so many quality people from here and in person has given me the courage to stand up for myself, and for students who may not have the "tools" to stand up for themselves or who may just need a safe zone.

I'm sure there will be several comments or questions from faculty and students in the days to come. My hope is that it provides opportunities for thoughtful conversation.

If I haven't said it already...let me say here how much I appreciate the support and encouragement from the Mels crowd!

Blessings to you all...

Congratulations, Out!
Posting that sign is quite a risk, but at least in my own experience, it is a risk well worth taking!

Here's hoping it leads to many interesting and productive conversations!

Very Happy Do you have any idea of how proud I am of you? As you say, look back to a year ago and see just how far you have come, it's amazing.

That is FABULOUS, Outies Smile

That's a huge step, and it says a lot about you that you feel ready to take it.
You're an amazing person; those kids are so lucky to have you on side. Knowing they have the support and understanding of a person in your position could be just what some of those kids need, especially living where they do. It's too easy to feel alone and alienated and like you just don't belong...

I'm glad that you have received so much support and friendship here, and I hope you know how much you are appreciated as a friend and support-giver in return.

SO proud of you Smile

Eil...
Thanks! You inspired me with your own sign!

No conversations yet, but I know they are coming.

WW,
Thanks for the encouraging words! I wonder if it would have taken me until I was 43 if there was a program like this when I went to school...

That is actually one of my main motivations...is to be a resource that I never had...

There is a reason and purpose for everything. Who am I to question the timing of it all?

Very Happy

This is such a positive and uplifting thing to read about. It gives me courage and motivation. I always love to see someone find their voice in a manner that is also helpful to others. I would have loved it if I had known someone like you when I was younger. It might have saved me a whole lot of untangling complications later on. You are an inspiration.

Exclamation
