India, Holi?

Anyone have any advice about traveling to India? How about the Festival of Holi? I don't know much about the regions of India. I am planning a trip for the spring, I think two weeks in February or March. I want to see some of the beautiful things I’ve been seeing in all these movies that I keep seeing about India, especially Outsourced which is so well done yet it isn't a big budget movie so I know it isn't showing me sites from India that you'd need a police cordon, a dolly crane, scaffolding, and $500,000 to see. Specifically the scene in Outsourced of Holi really drew me in. Does anyone have advice for a woman who wants to celebrate Holi safely?

shellsa,

Hello...nice to meet you.

When I travel to places I have never been I generally do a lot of research on the country and different area's of the country. I try to find out all I can about the people. I also look at the customs, holidays, festivals and traditions...anything I might find interesting. Once we have a good idea of what we would like to do and see we take that information to a travel agent and we tell them what we would like to see, where we would like to go and ask them what they recommend. Part of their job is to advise you on how to stay safe when you travel.

Call the consulate in India or visit the websites or better yet do both (even though when you talk to the travel agent they should know all the info but DO IT YOURSELF also)...find out where the danger area's are...what it is like for a lesbian there...should you walk down the street holding your lovers hand...should you openly kiss her in public etc.

You can find the U. S. consulate in India (they have a few of them) by searching the web using these key words U. S. Consulate India and then look over those websites (not just the first page you see) and you will find if there are any high risk areas you need to STAY AWAY from

http://newdelhi.usembassy.gov
http://mumbai.usconsulate.gov
http://chennai.usconsulate.gov

I recommend that you talk to a travel agent...visit a lot of websites on tourism in India (which I am sure you have done).

Here are 3 websites that will provide you with some information on Holi and tours in India

You can also do a web search using the keywords India Holi tours

http://www.tourism-of-india.com/holi.html

http://www.fourseasonsindiatour.com/fairs-festivals/holi-christmas-dewali-dusshehra-rakhi.html

http://www.etourism-india.com/festivals-in-india/holi.html

Sorry I don't have any other information for you but I hope this all helps.

Hugs,
Eiregirl Arrow
