This article raises many debates of what it means if we accomplish building intelligent computers and extending our lives indefinately. I am curious what others think. I will wait to share my views on this topic.

Did you read the article or are you just responding about the title and book?

did not read article... though i did link to it... sorry Phoenix, i'm fresh home from work and all THAT reading... i just don't have it in me at the moment to sit here and read the whole thing....
so, i am not responding directly to the article.... but am not totally ignorant of the few concepts i skimmed...
again,,,, us? brave?... i hardly think so... unless you mean facetiously...
the book... haven't read it in nearly 40 years, so i can't exactly respond directly to it either.... _________________ " The sorcerers in life are created within each of us" --- Lynn V. Andrews

Hello Hello Pho.
I'm starting on the article and already I'm pretty skeptical about this scenario.
Even if scientists are making breakthroughs, i don't think we have the resources to produce those highly sophisticated gizmos and gadgets.
I've seen quite a bit of poverty in the last couple of years...the life that, we, americans live is really not the norm around the globe. Many many people live without modern technology like puters, microwaves, and running water. If such a substantial portion of the human race is living life like that, we're not going to become dependent on machines.
And humans are pretty intuitive i think...I"m currently learning to wash clothes by hand, use a nonflushing toilet, and drink only boiled water--and i'm not even in a third world country.
anyways, technology costs money and most people (and countries) don't have it.
But I'm not afraid rich people will power this...robot world. Society wouldn't allow it.
ok...I've only read a couple paragraphs...I'll go back to reading it.

I think this guy isn't much into in marxist theory...or basic history.
No elite can remain in power forever. I don't think technology can change that.
"Robotic industries would compete vigorously among themselves for matter, energy, and space, incidentally driving their price beyond human reach. Unable to afford the necessities of life, biological humans would be squeezed out of existence."
I just thought that was kute. Evolution (darwin style) can explain how indeginous species have become extinct, BUT why would a computer be inherently more fit to survive on this earth?
Robots= speed and efficiency...possibily adaptability?
Humans= adaptability and unpredictability. Sometimes people can make no sense at all...and I think that's a good thing.
"unbounded superintelligent robot" I also think this is a kute phrase. Whaaaaat a science geek! lovin it.
Dude, I hope i never turn 200 with a body of silicon! Sex would suck!! and what's life without sex? come on now!
OH gosh. now we're talking about Star Trek Borgs?!? this guy is nuts.
"Specifically, robots, engineered organisms, and nanobots share a dangerous amplifying factor: They can self-replicate. A bomb is blown up only once - but one bot can become many, and quickly get out of control."
Robots can reproduce?...robot porn. sweet!
...if a puter program can replicate out of control, how does that relate to the physical world? like...dl itunes songs. maybe the program would keep dling a song and it would be annoying. then the memory is filled and the program goes to another computer etc etc until all the puters in the world are filled with the same song. Then humans come along and melt that metal down and make new puters. no problem.
Weapons of mass destruction and robots with too much sex drive: I really can't see the world society as peaceful enough to last as long as we can get technology to take us over. We'll bomb ourselves of our own free will first.
"we are on the cusp of the further perfection of extreme evil" KUTE!
OK i got bored with Bill Joy's memoir about his love for Science Fiction.
I never gave the guy a chance. I'm sorry. but he should watch the aeon flux animations. he'd love them.

PS
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to ridicule the article you posted (well I guess I did--but it's not personal). I'm glad you posted it. it's interesting.
