Melswebs First Annual Campout - CAMP INFO

Melswebs First Annual Campout
June 18 - 25, 2006
Dahlonega, GA

The idea has been tossed about for quite a while among many members; getting together somewhere and meeting face to face, putting voices to our words and planting all these hugs in firm memory. With that in mind, we’re making it official, there’s going to be a campout for us, the ladies of melswebs. We are putting together a lot of things as the date approaches and as more details are known; specifically a head count.

The Swiftwaters womanspace camp is located in Lumpkin County, Georgia... which is about 70 miles north of Atlanta in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains very near the southernmost terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The camp is lesbian owned and managed, and has been for 27 years. It is rustic camping, the grounds are meadow river bottom, we’ll be pitching our tents on soft sandy loam soil. Joyce and Pat are the owners and operators of the 22 acre site and are very excited to have us join them.

Children and pets are welcome . There are no hookups for Rvs and Joyce explained that the winding road to camp really doesn’t work well for Rvs either... so tents it is. There are a couple woman built cabins available, also rustic. Each cabin sleeps four in two double beds which are bunked in a loft arrangement. Hot showers and outhouses. Firepits and firewood. A small river borders the tent area where tubing is said to be quite nice. Rates are very reasonable $15 per woman first night, $5 thereafter, children are free, $5 per pet per night. Check out the website.

Swiftwaters is within 20 miles of many local offerings including a kangaroo preserve, Georgia’s tallest waterfall, a wildlife preserve with white tigers, a gold mine which offers tours and all day panning, trout fishing, horseback riding, many hiking trails, whitewater kayaking, bike trails, antique malls, and the town of Dahlonega (Cherokee for yellow) itself which is on the National Historic Register.

Food? You ask? Dahlonega is 8 miles away with restaurants and grocery stores. To get a better picture in your mind of the area look up visual-voyage.com/dahlonega/index.html

Many dates were considered until Joyce informed us that The Atlanta Pride Fest is June 23-25 and accordingly, their camp tends to be deserted at this time in summer, so we’d have the place virtually all to ourselves. That is how the dates were chosen.

At this point, we want to get this much information out on the boards. Then we need to get a head count started. Swiftwaters will easily accommodate 60, if the numbers begin to climb much above that.... well...... ? We’re taking this one step at a time and we’ll cross that bridge if needed. If you decide you are going to attend please “vote” a yes on the poll.

If you have questions, please post them here. We’re trying to save Joyce a deluge of phone calls and likely somebody else desires the same info which makes ask/answer here just as simple. If you have suggestions, please, also make them.

thanks for the replies ladies.... as to international travellers, and in general all fly-ins, and for those who want to try to be there... we are relying on these posts to guide us.... keep them coming.... We have already considered arranging shuttles from Atlanta airport, and have heard from others who simply need a ride (in chat)... Our hope is that with continued posts, the network will build itself; just as this campout is slowly building itself. We don't know what we need to do, or bring until you tell us. We won't be able to satisfy every need but we can sure as hell try.
Keep the posts coming. See ya there !

I'm not the camping type, and would be unlikely to make it anyway, but I can tell you that the campground is in one of the most beautiful regions in the Eastern US. I had a great-aunt who had a log cabin in the mountains between Dahlonega and Gainesville, and I always loved visiting her. I'd go hiking and clearing the trails behind her cabin, getting covered head to toe in red mud, and then wash myself clean (more or less) in one of the stream's pools before marching back to the house to dry off on the porch. Lots of wild berry bushes, wildlife, birds... you're really going to love it.
